Edinburgh City Apartments: Church Hill Lodge A bright, conveniently located one-bedroom lodge house in a peaceful location in the leafy Church Hill area. Private parking, and a frequent bus service in to the city (city-centre 15 or 20 minutes by bus, half an hour on foot).
Church Hill Lodge is a one-bedroom architecturally significant house (B-listed) house in a leafy area only a 20-minute bus ride or half-hour walk from the city centre. Church Hill is a green residential neighbourhood of large villas and is quiet and peaceful yet convenient for visiting the sights of Edinburgh. It gives you the best of both worlds: an almost rural atmosphere in the middle of Scotland’s capital city (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). The big advantage of this property is that it has its own private parking space: a rarity in the centre of Edinburgh. Once a lodge house serving the large villa next door, Church Hill Lodge is a pretty detached one-bedroom house on two floors. The ground floor has a lounge (with dining table and chairs), galley kitchen and cloakroom/WC, while the upper floor has a double bedroom (with windows on two sides) and en-suite bathroom with three-piece suite including a bath and shower over. All linen and towels are included in the price. The lounge looks over a colourful courtyard and there is access to a beautiful south-facing garden, which is shared with the apartments in the neighbouring villa. The quiet atmosphere is more like being in the country than in the middle of a big city, and yet the city centre is easily accessible, so you can take advantage of the major tourist attractions, festival venues, shops, nightlife and transport connections. The apartment is an ideal base for a short city break in Edinburgh or for a longer holiday if you want to explore further afield. What's the apartment like?
The property is a characterful one-bedroom lodge house in the tranquil Church Hill area. The house is split over two levels: downstairs are the living-room (which overlooks a colourful courtyard), kitchen and a separate cloakroom, while upstairs is the double bedroom with its en-suite bathroom (with bathtub and shower over). The house is approached down a few steps from the parking area. The living-room has a sofa as well as a dining table and chairs. The picturesque window looks on to a pretty courtyard. There is living-flame gas fire (with period fire surround) and a TV and a wee library of books complete the home comforts. The modern kitchen, though small, is well provided with crockery, cutlery, glasses and kitchenware, as well as a fridge, cooker and microwave oven.
The bright double bedroom has windows on two sides and is fully carpeted and attractively furnished. The en-suite bathroom has a wash-hand basin and bathtub with shower over. The apartment has full central heating; the price of electricity and local taxes is included. For the comfort of future guests, the apartment is non-smoking and pets are not allowed.
Where is the apartment? This house is an ideal base from which to explore the city. You can leave your car in the private parking space and hop on one of the many buses into to town, which in 15 or 20 minutes will have you in the heart of the city. We recommend that you buy day tickets (buy one on your first bus of the day) so that you can take as many buses as you like over the course of the day. Or if you feel up to it and want to experience more of the city, you can easily walk to town via The Meadows. The Meadows were originally under water: the Burgh Loch, which was drained in 1740, was one of Edinburgh’s main water supplies. The area is now one of the city’s biggest green spaces, ideal for jogging, walking and other sports. There are public tennis courts, a children’s playpark and Bruntsfield Links Golf Course, one of the oldest courses in the world, where you can have a round of pitch-and-putt. Church Hill Lodge was originally a lodge serving the neighbouring villa, which has since been divided into separate apartments. Church Hill grew up during the 18th and 19th century as wealthy citizens moved out of the city centre for a more comfortable life. Church Hill is both the name of a street and the small surrounding area. Technically it is part of Burghmuirhead; all of Burghmuirhead was once part of the estate of Greenhill. The original Burghmuirhead House can be seen at the end of a lane on the west side of Morningside Road near Church Hill (the street). Church Hill lies between the areas of Morningside and Bruntsfield, both well known for their village atmosphere. There are a great variety of independent and specialist shops in the area, too numerous to mention, but a stroll down Morningside Road (turn left at the junction with Church Hill Place) or Bruntsfield Place (turn right at the junction with Church Hill Place) will let you discover them for yourself. There are many cafés, restaurants and bars to choose from. The Canny Man’s at 237 Morningside Road, with its Victorian interior crammed with curios and antiques, is one of the best-known pubs in Edinburgh. On the way to Bruntsfield you’ll pass Holy Corner, so called because of the churches that stand on each corner of the junction. Round the corner from Church Hill Lodge is the Church Hill Theatre (a former church building). The theatre is a Fringe venue during the Edinburgh Festival, and local amateur theatre companies put on productions here throughout the rest of the year. Down Morningside Road on Newbattle Terrace is the Dominion Cinema, a small independent cinema with allegedly the comfiest seats in the country in its Gold Class lounge.
