Why Edinburgh? Edinburgh is one of the world's great cities, with something for everyone at all times of the year: And apart from these special events, the city offers a wealth of historical and cultural attractions, from castles and palaces to world-class galleries and museums. All this makes Edinburgh an ideal destination at any time of year. 2009 is the year of Homecoming Scotland, a year-long celebration of of Scotlands culture and heritage. 2009 marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of our national poet, Robert Burns. Homecoming Scotland is an exciting and inspirational programme of events and activities across the country to encourage Scotland's extended family around the globe to come home in 2009 to celebrate not only Burns but the many great contributions that Scotland has given the world. As part of Homecoming Scotland, Edinburgh hosted The Gathering 2009 in July, a celebration of the contribution made by the clans to the culture and history of Scotland.
